FINALLY! Kingmakers Announce Date For New Ooni’s Coronation

Giesi one of the four royal families in Ile Ife has been named as the only ruling house qualified to present candidates for the vacant throne of the Ooni of Ife by the 16 Ife kingmakers, The Nation reports.

Late Oba Sijuwade, Ooni Of Ife

The kingmakers also stated that the new Ooni would emerge in the next 40 days.
Oba Folorunso Omisakin, the Obalufe, addressing newsmen at the Ooni’s palace, said the 1980 Ife chieftaincy declaration will be used in selecting the next Ooni.
The Obalufe said it was the turn of the Giesi to produce the Ooni, urging the other ruling houses to wait for their turn and maintain peace.

The other ruling houses; Osinkola, Ogboru, and Lafogido families have at different times in the past produced the Ooni of Ife.
However the Lafogido ruling house has said it would challenge the kingmakers’ decision in court, stating that Giesi lost its chance to produce the Ooni in 1980 when it conceded to the late Oba Sijuwade, who hailed from Ogboru ruling house.
Consequently, Lafogido argued that Giesi must wait until the rotation comes to it again.
The announcement from the kingmakers has been long awaited after candidates from other ruling houses started  to agitate for the throne.
The late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who reigned from 1980 to 2015, is from the Ogboru ruling house.

Giesi ruling house last produced an occupant to the throne between 1880 and 1894, Derin Ologbenla, while the Lafogido ruling house produced, Oba Ademuluyi Ajagu (1910-1930).
Adesoji Aderemi, Oba Sijuwade’s predecessor, who reigned between 1930 and 1980, came from the Oshikola ruling house.
In a related development, a Nigerian pastor based in Ghana, Pastor Paul, has said the Lord told him that Ovation Magazine founder, Dele Momodu, is the next Ooni of Ife.
