Well this is a movie that needs no introduction. The Sony productions movie about the assasination of North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un has grossed $1 million on its first day of release. Sony thanked movie watchers for seeing the limited release of the movie. The movie was released to theatres on Boxing Day December 26, 2014.
Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in a statement:
“Considering the incredibly challenging circumstances, we are extremely grateful to the people all over the country who came out to experience ‘The Interview’ on the first day of its unconventional release. The audience reaction was fantastic – the limited release, in under 10% of the amount of theatres originally planned, featured numerous sell-outs and a first-day gross over $1 million.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton in a video obtained by ABC News talked about the decision to ultimately release the movie, saying;
“It was essential for our studio to distribute this movie, especially given the assault on our business and on our staff.”
