A flyover under construction in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata (Calcutta) has collapsed, on Thursday, crushing vehicles below it, killing at least 17 people and leaving dozens more injured and trapped in the rubble, authorities said. . Television footage from the scene showed residents using their bare hands to help the rescue effort as many people are feared trapped under the concrete and steel bridge, which fell on a busy road. Speaking to CNN, Maj. Gen. Anurag Gupta, from India’s National Disaster Management Authority, on Thursday evening said that authorities didn’t then know how many people were driving across the bridge when it fell or how many more remained trapped. “We cannot predict how many people are still under wreckage,” Gupta said. “We can’t tell, since it’s a bridge and not a building.” A spokesperson for the left-wing party that governs the state of West Bengal of which Kolkata is the capital, said in a tweet: “Monumental tragedy. A Beninoise woman is currently standing trial over the theft of a property running into millions of naira. A 42-year-old food vendor, Janet Kenu, who allegedly broke into a residential house and stole jewellery worth N40 million, was Thursday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Kenu, from Cotonu in Benin Republic, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and breaking and entering. Prosecuting Corporal Cyriacus Osuji told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on March 10, at noon, at A10, Nicon Town, Lekki Expressway, Lekki, Lagos. He said that the defendant broke into the house of one Ajisola Yomi, and stole jewellery worth N40 million. According to the prosecutor the offences contravened Sections 285 ( , 305 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. This collapse, according to the report lasted for three hours. The Nigerian Army has announced that Colonel Samaila Inusa who was abducted by unknown gunmen on Sunday in Kaduna has been found dead. A tweet from the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Army said the colonel was found dead on Tuesday. Inusa was kidnapped alongside his wife, but she was dropped off by the kidnappers who drove the officer towards Abuja in a Mercedes Benz car. The army had initially offered to pay anyone with useful information about the abduction, N500,000. The figure was later increased to N1 million.
